Women charged after police find 2 horses dead, 34 malnourished on property

ADAMS COUNTY, Wis. — Two women have been charged after police found 34 malnourished horses and two dead horses on their property in Arkdale.
Kimberly Schmid, 55, is charged with one count of mistreatment of animal causing death and 25 counts of fail to provide proper food to confined animal. Sandra Gorman, 57, is charged with two counts of mistreatment of animal causing death.
On Nov. 1, deputies were dispatched to an address in the Town of Strongs Prairie to do a welfare check on horses at their property. According to a press release, deputies found 34 horses in various degrees of declining health and malnourishment. Two horses on the property were dead and a third horse was euthanized by veterinary staff. The initial investigation indicates the animals died from lack of nutrition and care, according to the press release.

“I’ve noticed since the animals– the horses– were delivered, that it seemed to be an awful lot of horses for the little space they had,” said neighbor, Dave Schmitt. “Some of them looked like they were on the malnourished side and from the water started flooding out their pasture land, it appeared to me, not being a horse person, that it was pretty obvious there was not enough food for these horses. There were some, where, I don’t know if it was from age or malnourishment, but yeah you could see their ribs. They weren’t all healthy.”
