Woman walks around downtown Madison, gives clothes to homeless for Christmas

Everyone has their holiday traditions around Christmas time. For one Sun Prairie woman, she’s making doing something good a tradition this year.

Kaitlyn Batz collected winter clothes throughout December to prepare for an evening of walking around downtown Madison and handing them out to homeless people.

“It’s a hard time of the year to be homeless, I’m sure,” Batz said. “They don’t have much to celebrate and everyone should have something to celebrate and be happy for at this time of the year.”

Batz carried several bags of coats, scarves, socks, pants and other winter items around the capitol square in downtown Madison. She walked up to any homeless person she could find to wish them a Merry Christmas and give them any item they asked for.

“It felt really good to see their appreciation and I was happy they were willing to tell me what they needed and weren’t afraid to ask for what I had,” Batz said. “I would rather give them what they need than what I think they need.”

The homeless people showed their appreciation for what Batz was doing. One homeless person told Batz, “I love what you are doing. You all have a blessed day and a good Merry Christmas and a good Happy New Year.”
