A Madison man faces a robbery charge following an incident on the city’s south side.

Madison officers were called to the 600 block of S. Park Street around 5:30 p.m. Sunday for a report of an attempted robbery.

A 56-year-old woman told officers a man tried to forcefully grab her bag for several minutes, according to a release by the Madison Police Department.

The victim told police she was shocked and “freaked out” that someone would attempt to rob her during the day.

Police said the suspect, Abrocio Contreras-Nava, 31 of Madison, was still in the area.

He provided a fake name and was eventually identified at the Dane County Jail thanks to technology at the facility, according to the report.

A preliminary blood alcohol test was also performed, police said. Contreras-Nava registered a 0.324, according to the report.
