The woman who pleaded guilty to slamming a toddler in her care to the floor in January was sentenced Tuesday.

Erica Dorsch, 31, of Madison, pleaded guilty in July to the charge of felony child abuse including intentionally causing harm to her 3-year-old foster son.

She was sentenced Tuesday to 8 years of probation and 12 months conditional jail time, which means Dane County authorities will determine how that time will be served.

Police said officers responded on the morning of Jan. 27 to the 700 block of Engelhart Drive on a report that a boy had suffered a serious head injury. He was taken to a hospital in serious condition.

According to the criminal complaint , Dorsch told police she became angry in the bathroom when she believed the boy lied about washing his face. She said she threw a book at him, hitting his head, then yanked him off the toilet, pushing him to the floor as hard as she could multiple times.
