Woman arrested for heroin possession given Narcan in jail for overdose

A 31-year-old woman arrested late Saturday night on several charges, including heroin possession, had to be given an opiate overdose medication after becoming lethargic while behind bars, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office said.

Authorities said officials found the woman lethargic and with lowered vital signs inside the Dane County Jail around midnight Sunday during a medical check. She was given a dose of Narcan as the jail doctor recommended before being taken to a hospital by ambulance.

The woman arrived back at the jail after being treated at the hospital and was placed into an isolated unit for monitoring, authorities said.

She had been arrested and booked into the jail Saturday on charges of child neglect, heroin possession and resisting, the sheriff’s office said.

Officials said close monitoring of inmates in the segregation area of the jail ensured the woman received the medical attention she needed to prevent an overdose.
