Wisconsin Union’s terrace chairs heading into storage as cooler weather approaches

MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin Union’s iconic sunburst chairs are leaving the Memorial Union Terrace and heading back into storage for the season as cooler temperatures approach.

The disappearance of the chairs marks the official end of Terrace Season 2021, which began in mid-April with limited access due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Removing the chairs is a significant undertaking, Shauna Breneman from the Wisconsin Union said.

“We have 1,300 chairs at Memorial Union alone,” she said. “It takes weeks of planning and preparation to remove the chairs and about two to three days to physically remove them from (Memorial) Union and Union South.”

The chairs’ storage spot is a “top secret location,” she added.

The chairs first debuted in 1929 and have undergone several evolutions to become the bright yellow, green and orange metal chairs with the trademarked sunburst design.
