Wisconsin secretary of state sues over office funding cuts
Doug LaFollette,  Secretary of State

Longtime Wisconsin Secretary of State Doug La Follette is suing Republican Gov. Scott Walker over budget cuts to his office.

La Follette, the only Democrat in statewide office, filed a lawsuit Tuesday in Dane County against Walker and state Department of Administration Secretary Scott Neitzel.

La Follette says the budget Walker signed into law Sunday results in his office having only one staff person. The office also would be relocated to the basement of the state Capitol building, reducing office space to about 900 square feet.

The lawsuit contends La Follette’s budget was cut by 47 percent, making it “practically impossible” for him to do his job.

A spokeswoman for the state Justice Department, which would defend Walker and Neitzel, says the office is reviewing the complaint.
