Wisconsin legislature proposes to create stricter immigration enforcement

MADISON, Wis. — A bill in the Wisconsin legislature could give local law enforcement the power to interrogate and arrest members of the immigrant community, and turn them over for deportation.
The Republican-backed bill, AB 190, would require local law enforcement to comply with Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer requests, instead of the 48-hour detainment being up to a local department’s discretion.
Voces de la Frontera led a “people’s hearing” against the bill Wednesday. The event highlighted how much the state’s $43 billion dairy industry depends on immigrant workers and featured testimonials from farmers across the state.
