William Glenn McNeill
William Glenn McNeill, age 92, of Mineral Point, formerly of Dodgeville, passed away on Saturday, June 9, 2012 at the Mineral Point Care Center.
Glenn was born on July 31, 1917, the son of William A. and Annie (Frank) McNeill and was raised on the McNeill farm near Hollandale, WI. He attended Prairie Grade School and graduated from the Hollandale High School in 1935. He farmed for a few years before entering the Army Air Corps and trained at Kessler Field, Mississippi. Glenn then was stationed in Italy during WWII serving as a fireman and had the privilege of traveling back to the states on the Queen Mary. For the next 35 years he farmed in partnership with his brother Walter on the McNeill farm. He was a passionate farmer that cared for the livestock and the land. In 1980, he retired from farming and moved to Dodgeville where he resided for the next 30 years.
The past three years Glenn resided at the Mineral Point Care Center. Glenn found enjoyment in attending the Wisconsin State Fair, local county fairs, home talent baseball and many family reunions. He was a lifelong member of the Bethel United Methodist Church. He especially enjoyed his “breakfast club” friends, where he seldom missed a morning with them. Glenn also enjoyed the informal Jonesdale Men’s Coffee Hour later in life. He will be remembered as a kind and caring gentleman. He carried his very sharp mind and great memory for his entire life. He made many friends and getting to know him meant to appreciate him.
Glenn is survived by his sister, Edna Olney of California. He is further survived by his six nieces and nephews and their families, Richard (Gloria) McNeill, Larry (Jennilyn) McNeill, Carolyn Olney, Laurie (Les) Mitchell, Bruce (Carol) McNeill and Linda (Tom) Wilshire. He was preceded in death by parents, William and Annie McNeill; a sister, Pearl Taylor; two brothers, Russell and Walter McNeill and in-laws, Viola McNeill, Carolyn McNeill and Sheldon Olney.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, June 15, 2012 at Bethel United Methodist Church on Hwy 39 with visitation from 9:30 A.M. until the time of services. Following a luncheon at the church, burial will be in Graceland Cemetery in Mineral Point with Military Honors accorded by American Legion Post #170.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bethel United Methodist Church. The family wishes to thank Dr. Biere and his staff and especially the care he received at the Mineral Point Care Center these past three years. He loved sitting outside at the Care Center and taking part in their activities. Uncle Glenn was a very important part of our lives and will be missed dearly.
