GREEN BAY ? Two months, two awards. And dating back to last year, three in a row.
Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is the NFC Offensive Player of the Month for October, just as he was for September. And just as he was for December 2010.
Rodgers led the Packers to a 4-0 record and completed 97 of 136 passes (71.3 percent) for 1,455 yards with 12 touchdowns and two interceptions for an NFL-best 129.4 passer rating in four games in October before the Packers? Oct. 30 bye. In all four October games, he had at least 300 yards passing, two or more touchdowns and a passer rating of 110.0 or higher.
Rodgers enters Sunday?s game at San Diego having completed 71.55 percent of his passes (171 of 239) for 2,372 yards with 20 touchdowns and only three interceptions (a 1.26% interception percentage) for a passer rating of 125.7. Those numbers project to 5,422 yards with 46 touchdowns and only seven interceptions, meaning he is on pace to break the NFL single-season records for completion percentage, yardage and passer rating and within striking distance of the record for touchdown passes.
?I like to look at those numbers when the season?s over, but when you have a lot of friends who play fantasy football and remind you of what your stats were every week and how many points you scored, you can?t help but be aware of that,? Rodgers said during one of his recent radio shows on ESPNMilwaukee and ESPNMadison. ?I think it?s been exciting to start off the season the way we have on offense, and personally get off to the start that I wanted to. It?s all about making good decisions and being smart with the football and not turning it over. Unfortunately, I?ve had three fourth-quarter interceptions, other than that it?s been a pretty clean slate for me. When we?re not turning the ball over on offense, we?re going to have a great chance to win a lot of those games we?re in (because) our defense has been doing a great job at taking the ball away.?
In his seventh season from California, this is Rodgers? fourth career Offensive Player of the Month Award and third in a row (December 2010, September 2011, October 2011).
Rodgers joins Pro Football Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders, who won the award in October, November and December of 1997, as the only players to be named Offensive Player of the Month in three consecutive months.
Rodgers and Brett Favre (five) are the only Packers to be named Offensive Player of the Month multiple times.
