Whitewater girls basketball a family affair

The Whitewater girls basketball team is off to a great start this season. The Whippets are undefeated and ranked third in division three.

The Whippets are a family on the court, but off the court their leading scorers Sarah and Rebekah Schumacher are sisters.

Sarah is a senior on the team, while Rebekah is a sophomore. Big sister Sarah is happy to share the floor with her younger sibling.

“It’s definitely cool to be out there with my sister,” Sarah Schumacher said.

Both girls credit growing up together with their chemistry on the court. Sarah said, at times, she can read Rebekah’s mind.

“I think we can definitely, kind of, tell what the other one is thinking,” Sarah Schumacher said.

Starting the season undefeated is great, but the Whippets and the Schumachers have their eyes on a bigger prize. They want to win a state championship.

Head coach Judy Harms said the fate of the team is in their own hands.

“We have a theme every year,” Harms said. “Our theme this year is ‘the best way to make history is to write it.’ Right now, they are writing the script. Unbelievable.”
