Whitewater drops opener at Div. 3 baseball

Whitewater, La Crosse win baseball openers

The UW-Whitewater baseball team got off to a rocky start at the NCAA Division 3 baseball regional in La Crosse Wednesday, losing to Ripon 15-7 at Copeland Park.

Whitewater led 2-1 after two innings, but Ripon scored the next 12 runs.

Nick Schmitt hit a grand slam for Ripon (24-14) while Michael Polcyn added a two-run homer.

Mike Mierow hit a solo homer for Whitewater in the seventh.

The top-seeded Warhawks (33-10) faces an elimination game against St. John’s, MN Thursday morning at 10 in La Crosse.
