White substance released at recycling facility injures 13, officials say

WAUNAKEE, Wis. — Several people reported feeling ill Wednesday night after they reported seeing a white substance released at a recycling center, officials said.
The Madison Fire Department’s Hazardous Incident Team was sent around 11:55 p.m. to the Advanced Disposal in the 300 block of Raemisch Road in Waunakee, according to a release. Crews were told 13 people became ill after a white substance was released while sorting through materials at the recycling center.
Monitors used by the HIT team were not able to pick up any indications of the substance, and there was no product visible on the clothing of the affected workers, officials said.
Surveillance video showed that whatever substance might have been in the sorting line had been processed and packed for transport, according to the release. The affected package was removed from the facility.
Officials said they still do not know what the substance is, but they are confident the plant is safe.
