Where to pick your own strawberries in Dane County
Strawberry season is almost here.
Starting in June, locals will have the chance to pick their strawberries at a slew of local farms. One of these establishments is Bures Berry Patch in Barneveld, owned and operated by Ed and Kathy Bures for the last 20 years.
The Bures family grows an assortment of produce including asparagus, rhubarb and potatoes in addition to their pick-your-own varieties of strawberries, peas and pumpkins. Kathy Bures says June is hands down the best time to pick berries.
“Have fun in the patch, and sample a few so you know what a truly ripe berry looks and tastes like,” Kathy Bures advises novice berry-pickers. “Then, go for the red and juicy ones while being careful to pick a bit of stem with the berry so that they stay fresh and tasty.”
The Bures family likes their strawberries best in pie form, and Kathy Bures says they cook up their Grandma Minick’s version at least five times during the season. This easy recipe only requires six ingredients (sans whipped cream) and can be viewed here along with other family recipes you can enjoy this strawberry season.
With 50 years of combined experience, the Bures have learned lots of other lessons in the farming business, including learning to ride out the storm – or lack thereof.
“A farmer cannot control the weather which our crops are so highly dependent on,’’ Kathy Bures says. “We’ve had plenty of good and bad seasons over the years and we’ve learned that there are only so many things we can control. … We have to focus on what we can control and stay positive through the things we can’t.”
