What is kennel cough?

Kennel cough is the common name given to canine tracheobronchitis, a very contagious respiratory disease that dogs can get. Dogs who have recently been boarded or who have spent time around numerous dogs are considered to be at-risk.
Also called Bordetella, dogs with this virus typically display these symptoms:
– Coughing
– Retching
– Watery nasal discharge
Dogs with mild cases of kennel cough may continue to be active and eat normally.
For dogs with more severe cases, symptoms can include a fever, lethargy and lack of appetite. If left untreated, severe cases can potentially lead to pneumonia.
If you suspect your dog has kennel cough you should consult your veterinarian to determine a treatment plan that’s right for your dog.
