Wausau doctor sentenced to three months in prison for fraudulent fentanyl prescription scheme

WAUSAU, Wis. — A Wausau man was sentenced to three months in federal prison for obtaining fentanyl by use of misrepresentation and fraud.

Thomas Strick, 60, prescribed fentanyl patches to at least six patients who had no medical need for it, according to a press release. Strick instructed the patients to fill the prescriptions, then return the patches to him so he could use them himself.

According to officials, Strick wrote 193 fraudulent prescriptions and acquired 3,156 fentanyl patches between 2011 and 2018 while he worked as a physician at Aspirus Wausau Hospital and the Aspirus Wausau Family Clinic.

U.S. District Judge William Conley said that Strick violated the public’s trust and abused his professional responsibility by recruiting patients to participate in prescription fraud.

According to a press release, Strick was convicted in 2004 for similar conduct.

The charges against Strick are the result of an investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Wausau Police Department.
