Waunakee bests Portage 5-1

Wins share of Badger North crown
Waunakee bests Portage 5-1

Waunakee played two games Tuesday at Murphy Field. Sort of. First, they resumed play of last Monday’s game, which was tied 3-3 in the 9th inning, then suspended due to weather. Portage ended up winning the game in walk-off fashion on the 10th.

Game two was our Prep Mania Game of the Week. Waunakee needed a win to earn a share of the Badger North Conference Championship. Mount Horeb had already locked up their share of the crown, ending the season with a 10-2 conference record. Waunakee didn’t blink, pummeling Portage 5-1 Tuesday afternoon.

Blake Bieri allowed just five base runners and two hits as the Portage offense didn’t have an answer for his fastball/curve ball combination.

Waunakee’s bats scored early and often. In the 2nd inning, Mark Siehoff got things going for the Warriors.  His single to left center with two on gave the host team a 2-0 lead. Then in the 3rd, Max Helbing snuck one through the infield to score Willie Freimuth and push the lead to 3-0.

Waunakee then rode Bieri’s arm the rest of the way.
