Warning issued about safety of lake ice
Rainfall, warmer temps make ice thinner

MADISON, Wis. — Warming temperatures are prompting the Dane County Sheriff’s Office to warn citizens about the safety of ice on lakes.
Deputies also cite recent rainfall and a warmer forecast this weekend as threatening the safety of lake ice. They said weather conditions have drastically reduced the ice thickness and stability.
Mouths of creeks, rivers, and natural springs are all especially vulnerable, but might not appear to be weaker than thicker areas of ice.
Deputies recommend taking flotation devices and ice picks with you if you plan to go out on the ice.
