Walker surveys storm damage to see if state qualifies for aid

Cost estimate for damage from Sunday's storms not available yet

DODGEVILLE, Wis. — Families are continuing to pick up the pieces after a devastating stretch of severe weather hit Iowa County.

We are due for a break in the severe weather, but a lot of people around the state are still feeling the impact.

About 1,000 people are still without power in Iowa County after an EF-2 tornado hit the area Sunday night and damaged structures north of Governor Dodge State Park.

Gov. Scott Walker toured the destruction in Dodgeville Tuesday, including the Welp Family Farm, after first stopping in Fennimore to survey the damage there.

The Welp family’s barn was hit hard and debris was scattered everywhere.

Walker said he is starting the process to determine if the damage rises to the federal aid level.

“Certainly as we look at this more closely, we’ll look at objective criteria that Wisconsin Emergency Management sets up. We looked at some of that last week with the damage, and we’ll look at this as part of an overall package for both what the state and potentially what the federal government can add,” Walker said.

There isn’t a total cost estimate for damage caused by Sunday night’s storms.
