Viola Steiger, one day short of 102, formerly of Platteville, WI passed away August 28, 2017, in Woodstock, IL.
She was born August 29, 1915, in rural Potosi, the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (Wallenhorst) Schmitz. On February 29, 1939, she married Henry Steiger at St. Andrew’s Church in Tennyson. Together, they farmed near Potosi until 1966, when they moved to Platteville. In 2001, they moved to Woodstock, IL to be closer to family. Henry preceded her in death July 25, 2003.
Viola enjoyed being with family and friends, playing cards, traveling and baking. She was known for her beautiful smile, boundless love and warmth. She loved telling stories and had a good sense of humor. In her memory, hold your family close, and be kind to all you meet.
She is survived by her daughter, Jean (Stanley, deceased), Lindholm, four grandchildren: Diane (Scott) Etienne, Denise (Paul) Strahm, Danette (Robert) Monahan, David (Karrie) Lindholm, seven great-grandchildren: Riley and Kailey Lindholm, Ryan, Zachary, and Rachel Monahan, Luke and Chloe Etienne, sister-in-law, Celine Schmitz, and many nieces and nephews.. She was preceded in death by five brothers: Maynard, Orville, Vernon, Leo, Leroy, and three sisters: Marie Schmitz, Hilda Kieler, and Pearl Brandt.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 31, 2017, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Platteville. Visitation is 9:30 am until the time of service at 11 am, both at the church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Platteville. The Melby Funeral Home in Platteville is serving the family.
