Viola K. (Virnig) DeVoe

CHERRY VALLEY-Viola K. (Virnig) DeVoe, age 84, of Cherry Valley, Ill., passed away on Sunday, June 17, 2012, at Medina Nursing Home in Durand, Ill. She was born on August 28, 1927, in Madison, the daughter of Adrian and Marie (Kaltenberg) Virnig.

Viola graduated from Madison West High School. During World War II, she was a volunteer for the American Red Cross. Viola married Harold F. DeVoe on October 6, 1946, in Madison. She was a member of St. Dennis Catholic Church in Madison for 16 years and a member of St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Rockford for 45 years. She worked for Marshall Fields in Rockford for 21 years as well as Bergner’s and Topp’s . Viola loved music, listening to Lawrence Welk, dancing, and tending her garden and flowers. She would spend hours sitting in the backyard with Harold just talking. Viola also enjoyed playing euchre, the accordion, and most importantly, spending time with her family and friends.

Viola is survived by her children, James (Ann) DeVoe of Rockford, Ill., Joe DeVoe of Germantown, Jeannette England of Rosco, Ill., Jerome DeVoe of Cherry Valley, Ill., Jacqueline (Gary) Cozzi of Rosco, Jeff DeVoe of Cherry Valley, and Jayson DeVoe of Cherry Valley; ten grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; brothers, Vic Virnig of Madison, Tom (Niva) Virnig of Sauk Prairie, and Chuck (Mary Jo) Virnig of Madison; sister, Mary Lou (Donald) Taylor of Madison; and numerous other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and brother, Leonard.

Funeral services will be held at ST. DENNIS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 505 Dempsey Road, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 22, 2012, with Father Kent Schmitt presiding. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of service on Friday. A memorial service will also be held at ST. RITA’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 6254 Valley Knoll Drive, Rockford, Ill., at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 29, 2012, with Father David Peck presiding. Visitation will be at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Friday. Memorials in Viola’s name may be made to Hospice Care of America, 3815 N.
