Verona Ice Arena breaks ground on second ice rink

VERONA, Wis. – A second ice rink is coming to Verona as ground was officially broken on the new sheet of ice Saturday morning.

The Verona Ice Arena has seen a tremendous amount of growth over the last several years that there’s demand for another rink for hockey, ice skating, and figure skating.

A campaign as the “Ice for Kids of All Ages” was launched in 2022 hoping to raise more than $8 million to turn the seasonal outdoor rink just south of the old Eagle’s Nest into another indoor rink.

So far, more than $5.5 million has been raised by the community. It was enough to break ground on the new rink Saturday, but millions of dollars are still needed for the project to reach it’s full funding and be completed.

The creation of a second rink doubles the city’s ice rinks and will allow for more skaters to use the Verona Ice Arena. Le Jordan, the executive director of the Verona Area Chamber of Commerce, said a second rink will benefit not just those who plan on using it, but also nearby Verona businesses.

“The number of additional visitors this sheet of ice will bring to Verona is great for those local businesses,” said Jordan. “What’s good for our local businesses is good for our community as a whole.”

If the project stays on schedule, the rink is slated to open in time for the start of the 2023-2024 season.
