UW-Whitewater chancellor announces retirement

Richard Telfer will retire this summer after 30 years at university

WHITEWATER, Wis. — University of Wisconsin-Whitewater chancellor Richard Telfer announced Monday he will be retiring this coming summer.

Telfer said he joined the faculty staff of UW-W 30 years ago, and has served in many roles on the campus.

Telfer said his last day the university will be June 30.

“I believe we have exceptionally talented people in leadership positions who will continue to push for quality in the classroom and beyond,” Telfer said in a release.

The UW System will start a search for a new chancellor at some point, the release said.

“Dick has more experience in the UW System than just about anyone. He came up through the ranks as a faculty member, administrator, and academic leader. Dick understands the history, the importance and the value of the UW System. Under his leadership, UW-Whitewater’s reputation for academic and athletic success has soared both in the state and beyond,” UW System President Ray Cross said in a statement.

“On behalf of the members of our university community, I want to thank him for his exemplary service and dedication to the UW System. We will miss working with him, and wish him well in his retirement,” UW System Regent President Michael Falbo said in a statement.

Telfer said his plans for retirement include seeing his two children and their families, and he also plans to travel.
