UW Vice Provost, Dean of Students Lori Berquam diagnosed with breast cancer

Vice Provost and Dean of Students Lori Berquam announced Friday she was recently diagnosed with breast cancer.

Berquam said she will begin chemotherapy next week, but will continue to do the work she loves – supporting University of Wisconsin-Madison students.

“I may not be able to be at every event but rest assured, we’ve got an amazing team here in the Division of Student Life,” Berquam said in a letter to campus. “Together we will ensure that the Class of 2017 gets a fitting sendoff and the incoming class a warm Badger welcome at SOAR this summer.”

Berquam said she thought it was important to share the information about her health because everyone’s life will be touched by cancer in some way.

“I’ve had the privilege of supporting a number of student organizations that volunteer and raise funds to fight cancer and help survivors and their families. It’s shown me how powerful our community can be. This knowledge is a comfort and a source of strength and inspiration to me now and I hope it can be for others as well,” Berquam said in the letter.

Berquam said to keep an eye out for her on campus – possibly wearing a wig, scarf or fun hat -and that she wants to stay connected to the students.

“I will get through this with your support,” she said.
