Hurricane Florence has yet to make landfall but has already claimed two college football games in North Carolina.

North Carolina’s game against No. 18 UCF and North Carolina State’s game against No. 14 West Virginia were both called off Tuesday as the Category 4 storm churned out in the Atlantic Ocean.

“The current forecast for both the impact and aftermath of the hurricane would require those officials to divert critical resources from what could be much more significant duties,” UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham said in a statement. “We can’t know for certain the amount of damage the storm will inflict, but the sensible decision at this time is to not play the game.”

In addition, Wake Forest’s Thursday night home game against Boston College will now start two hours earlier at 5:30 p.m. ET.

The storm is forecast to make landfall in the Carolinas as a strong Category 3 sometime late Thursday or early Friday.

While UNC said the school will continue discussions with UCF about possibly rescheduling their game later this season, it remains unclear if the NC State-WVU game will be rescheduled.
