Trial delayed in La Crosse heroin case
Judge: Malachi Hankel not competent to stand trial at this time
LA CROSSE, Wis. — A trial is delayed for the Madison man accused of giving heroin to a town of Barre man who later died.
A medical report given to a La Crosse County judge says that 28-year-old Malachi Hankel is not competent to stand trial at this time.
Hankel, who did not appear in court Tuesday, is tied to the death of Thomas Tremain. A police report says Hankel drove Tremain from La Crosse to his town of Barre home and sold him some heroin.
An autopsy showed that Tremain died in September from acute intoxication due to the combined effects of heroin, alcohol and Xanax.
Hankel will have another competency hearing at the end of June.
