Traveling this summer? AAA says these websites, apps can save Wisconsinites thousands

50% of families are planning a vacation this summer

MADISON, Wis.– It’s the start of the summer travel season, and across the board, prices are up. But with the help of the Internet, AAA, and a little luck, you can save a lot of money on your next trip.

“There definitely is a lot of pent-up demand,” said Nick Jarmusz, AAA’s Director of Public Affairs.

Jarmusz says more than 700,000 Wisconsinites are traveling this Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial start to summer.

90% are driving and paying the highest gas prices in seven years. The average is $2.86/gallon: $1 more than last year, but only 5 cents higher than 2019.

“There is a lot of reason for optimism in the travel industry,” Jarmusz added.

50% of families are planning a summer vacation this year, and AAA cautions that planes, hotel rooms, and restaurants are filling up fast.

“If this is the first time you’ve traveled since the pandemic started, there are a lot of things that are going to be different,” Jarmusz said.

He recommends you plan ahead and use online resources like AAA’s interactive map, found here, to learn about the latest travel restrictions where you’re headed.

Wisconsin 511’s website and app can help provide traffic updates.

AAA recommends websites like Priceline or Hotels Tonight to help travelers find discounted rates.

When it comes to deciding whether driving or flying is the more cost-effective option for your family, Jarmusz recommends using AAA’s Gas Cost Calculator.

He also recommends consulting with a travel adviser, since conditions are changing, restrictions are lifting, and families may need to alter their plans last-minute. Advisers can help avoid change fees or penalties.
