Trader Joe’s, al fresco brand chicken sausages recalled

A recall of fully cooked chicken sausage products for possible foreign matter contamination includes a Trader Joe’s brand, according to a recall alert.

Kayem Foods of Chelsea, Massachusetts, is recalling about 59,203 pounds of chicken sausage products that may be contaminated with pieces of plastic, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.

The recall includes 12-ounce packages of Trader Joe’s brand Sweet Apple Chicken Sausage with case code 9605 and use by/freeze by dates of 4/22/15 and 4/29/15, and 8-ounce packages of al fresco brand Apple Maple Fully Cooked Breakfast Chicken Sausage with case code 9709 and use by/freeze by dates of June 12, 2015, and June 20, 2015.

The products were shipped to retail locations nationwide, officials said.

The contamination issue was discovered after two consumers found small pieces of plastic in the product, according to the alert. There have not been any reports of injuries associated with consumption of the products.
