Theodore E. Hagen

SUN PRAIRIE-Theodore Eugene “Ted” Hagen, age 83, of Sun Prairie, passed away at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison on Sunday, Aug. 27, 2017, after suffering a stroke a few days earlier. He was born on Oct. 16, 1933, in the Hamden Township near Keyeser, Wis., the son of Andrew and Alma (Rau) Hagen. Ted endured a lot of familial death early in his life. When he was two his father, passed away. Ted and his mother moved to Abelman, Wis. to live with his grandmother, Dina Veith Rau. Three years later Dina passed away and Ted and Alma moved to Madison, living in multiple apartments through the assistance of Mother’s Pension. Alma passed away when Ted was twenty-two, and soon after he was drafted by the U.S. Army and stationed in Germany. He served from 1955 to 1957. After his discharge, Ted moved to Oshkosh. While working for Hoffmaster Printing he took classes from the UW Extension in Horticulture Therapy. He spent three years teaching Horticulture Therapy at nursing homes in Oshkosh until he started to work for Wal-Mart. He retired from Wal-Mart in 2011 and moved to Sun Prairie. Ted enjoyed going to Maywood Lodge and impressing with how many pancakes he could eat. Other than his pancake exploits he was passionate about his nutrition and enjoyed eating as many green vegetables as he could. Ted was always game to go fishing and was always ready to help. He wished to donate his body for research; unfortunately his wish could not be honored. Ted is survived by numerous relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. A memorial service, followed by Military Honors, will be held at BETHLEHEM LUTHERAN CHURCH, 300 Broadway Dr., Sun Prairie, at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 7, 2017, with Pastor Steve Era officiating. Lunch will follow immediately after the service and burial at Spring Prairie Cemetery. A visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Carbone Cancer Center or Bethlehem Lutheran Church Indonesian Mission.
