Teens caught at mall with stolen devices, police say
Devices stolen from car parked in garage
MADISON, Wis. — Two devices stolen from a woman’s car while it was parked in her garage were found in the hands of two teens at West Towne Mall, according to a report from Madison police.
A 36-year-old West Valley Ridge Drive resident told police she left her purse inside her car and parked it in the garage with the door open and was only inside her home for a few minutes Monday afternoon when her purse was stolen. The purse contained an iPhone and iPad. The woman gave the device serial numbers to police, who drove through the area looking for potential leads.
A woman walking her dog in the neighborhood spotted the purse under a tree in a park. Police said the purse no longer had the devices or any cash.
A police dog was able to smell the purse and led officers toward a grocery store near West Towne Mall.
As police went to the mall, the device owner called police to say someone had turned the devices on and that tracking software showed they were inside the mall. Police said an officer spotted two 14-year-olds, one holding an iPad and the other an iPhone.
Police said the serial numbers on the devices matched the ones provided by the owners. The teens told police they bought the devices from someone else. One of the two later confirmed to police they had stolen the devices.Madison crime map
