Survey: Wisconsinites see childhood obesity as problem

600 people surveyed last month about tobacco use, obesity

MADISON, Wis. — The group Transform Wisconsin announced Monday that a recent statewide survey indicates 89 percent of Wisconsinites see childhood obesity as a very serious problem.

More than 600 people were surveyed last month about tobacco use and obesity in the state.

Transform Wisconsin broke down the data by key demographics, including gender and party affiliation, and said the breakdown helps show lawmakers what voters feel strongly about.

“What we are so pleased about with these numbers is that it opens the door to have these conversations and to let lawmakers know that people in their districts are going to support these types of initiatives,” said Maureen Cassidy, with the American Heart Association.

Researchers said Wisconsinites offered support for several proposals to try and combat obesity, including requiring an hour of daily activity for kids during school and making state and local governments serve farm fresh fruits and vegetables at schools.
