Sun Prairie throttles Verona 12-1
Cards head to state again

WAUNAKEE, Wis. — Things looked good for Verona at the start of their sectional final game against Sun Prairie. The Wildcats opened the game with a 1-0 1st inning lead. It didn’t last long. The Cardinals scored five runs in the 2nd inning and rolled to a 12-1 win in five innings.
After giving up a run in the 1st, Cards pitcher Kristen Hoppman settled down, not surrendering in another run to Verona.
In the 2nd inning, April Hommerding started things out as her three-run homer sparked a five run inning, making it 5-1 Sun Prairie after two.
In the 4th, with the Cardinals rolling 8-1, Cheyenne Holmes stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded. She blasted her second home run of the game into the cloudy Waunakee sky and pushed the lead to 12-1.
The game ended an inning later with the final score 12-1. The win sends Sun Prairie to state for the second straight year.
