Sun Prairie police arrest alleged bank robber

The Bank of Sun Prairie was robbed around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at 695 S. Grand Ave., Sun Prairie Police Chief Pat Anhalt said.

The robber entered the bank lobby, passed a note demanding money and left with an undisclosed amount of cash. He did not display a weapon and no employees were injured, according to a report from police.

Officers had received a tip that the robber was at the nearby Aldi grocery store at 750 Bunny Trail, so they established a perimeter and conducted a search. The Dane County Sheriff’s Office and a Town of Madison K-9 unit assisted with the search, according to the report.

After the search, new information revealed that the robber was most likely no longer in the immediate area, according to police.

The Sun Prairie Police Department is actively pursuing Alex Melton as a suspect in the crime. He is a white man, about 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing 170 pounds, with multiple facial tattoos and a neck tattoo of a flower. He is believed to be on foot in the Wisconsin Dells or Lake Delton area, according to police.

People were asked to avoid the area of South Grand Avenue and Hoepker Road, according to a Sun Prairie Police Department advisory warning. The investigation has since concluded and the roads are now open to the public.
