Students return to Madison high schools under construction
MADISON, Wis. — Freshmen returned to Madison’s high schools Thursday morning to start a school year of sharing campus with construction crews. MMSD and Findorff are renovating and creating additions to all the district’s high schools with funds approved by a $317-million referendum passed in 2020.
Findorff and MMSD representatives gave News 3 Now a tour of West High School Friday, August, 26th as crews were racing to finish spaces for students and staff to return.
They say construction is running on schedule and on budget. Construction will take two years.
“We work collaboratively with the district and we’re still tracking toward the budget we’re working with them on,” says Peter Saindon, a senior project manager with Findorff.
While construction will close off certain areas of the school, West’s new principal says it won’t impact class sizes. “Absolutely not. What this project does is create more spaces for our students and staff and we’re going to use every room every single hour of the day,” says principal Dan Kigeya.
Barriers will separate
learning zones from construction zones.
“We work very closely with Findorff,” says Tim Lemonds. “There are sound mitigations in place.. to do all we can to mitigate sound plans to do all we can to mitigate disruptions while class is in session,” he says.
