Storms, large hail possible late Tuesday night

Tornadoes possible during Thursday storms

MADISON, Wis. — The Madison area could see storms that produce large hail Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, and another threat of storms will come late in the day Thursday.

Showers and thunderstorms will develop mid-week as a low pressure system builds in from the southwest.

Southern Wisconsin will first see shower and thunderstorm activity develop late Tuesday night as a warm front associated with the system approaches from the south. Thunderstorms will develop north of the front into Wednesday morning. The main threat for severe weather will be in the form of large hail.

The storms will gradually weaken as they move farther northward into cooler air. There could be additional thunderstorm development Wednesday afternoon and night as the warm front continues its movement into Minnesota and central Wisconsin.

As of Monday night the Storm Prediction Center said there is a slight risk for severe weather across much of Wisconsin on Wednesday and Wednesday night.

As the low pressure system continues to track to the northeast, more thunderstorms will develop Thursday. The best chance for storms Thursday will be late in the day and at night as a cold front pushes through the state.

The cold front will move eastward into warm and increasingly humid air, with a few strong or severe storms possible. Large hail and high winds will be the main threats, although a few tornadoes may be possible.

The best chance for severe weather Thursday will be across Iowa and Minnesota, where the storms first develop. The threat for severe weather will come to an end with the passage of the cold front later Thursday night and early Friday.
