MONROE, Wis. — SSM Health Monroe Hospital is now recognized as a Level III Trauma Center.

There are now 41 hospitals with that designation in Wisconsin.

In order to be verified, a hospital must have 24-hour coverage by emergency medicine providers and a general surgeon must be available to respond within 30 minutes to care for an injured person. Level III centers assess, resuscitate, stabilize and perform emergency surgery before arranging a transfer for patients to a Level I or II facility if needed.

“Being certified as a Level III Trauma Center will allow more individuals to stay local in an emergency,” EMS Coordinator Mary Tessendorf said.

The process to earn this verification began in January 2020 and wrapped up in September 2021.
