Slovenia beats US in men’s hockey on first day
The United States men’s ice hockey team dropped its first game of the Winter Olympics to Slovenia 3-2 in overtime.
Jan Mursak scored the winner for Slovenia 38 seconds into the overtime period.
The U.S. jumped out to a 2-0 lead off goals from Brian O’Neill and Jordan Greenway.
Blaz Gregorc scored early in the third period for Slovenia to cut the America’s lead in half. With under two minutes left in the third, Slovenia pulled its goalie, Gasper Kroselj, and Mursak scored to tie the game at 2.
In overtime, Mursak was left alone in front of the U.S. net to score the game-winning goal off a pass from Gregorc.
Ryan Zapolski stopped 22 of the 25 shots he faced in net for the U.S., while Kroselj allowed two goals on 36 shots for Slovenia.
The U.S. will play Slovakia on Thursday night in another preliminary game.
