Shirley A. Greenwald

MADISON-Shirley A. Greenwald, age 81, of Madison, passed away on Saturday, April 7, 2012, at Agrace HospiceCare. She was born on March 5, 1931, in Mount Horeb, the daughter of Laura and George Lukken. After graduation, Shirley worked at Service Electric as a bookkeeper. She and a friend went to Washington, D.C. and worked at the Pentagon. She returned to Madison and was a bookkeeper for Fauerbach Brewing. She married her husband, Jim, and the couple moved to Davenport, Iowa so he could finish his chiropractic studies. In the summer of 1955, they moved to Prairie du Chien and opened Greenwald Chiropractic. Upon Jim’s retirement in 1999, they moved to Madison to be closer to family and friends. Shirley did volunteer work at Prairie Memorial Hospital and St. Peters Lutheran Church and sang in the choir. Her hobbies included reading, gardening, and babysitting her grandchildren. She especially looked forward to family gatherings. Shirley was proud of her children and grandchildren and enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s school and athletic activities. She enjoyed traveling to Hawaii and going on Caribbean cruises. She was an avid Badger fan and was proud of her Norwegian heritage especially enjoying lutefisk dinners in the fall.
Shirley is survived by her husband of 57 years, James, of Madison, her daughter, Julie (Tony) Bretl of Sun Prairie; her son, Paul (Jan) Greenwald of McGregor, Iowa; her daughter, Jane (John) Kluesner of Sun Prairie; her two grandsons, Alex and Andrew Kluesner; her nephews, Jeff (Ginny) Lukken of Mount Horeb, Jim of Mount Horeb, and Steve (Susie) Lukken of Phoenix, Ariz.; and her niece, Jan, of Middleton. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Phillip and Ralph; and sister-in-law, Grace Lukken.
A memorial service for Shirley will be held at ALL SAINTS LUTHERAN CHURCH, 2951 Chapel Valley Road, Madison at 11:30 A.M., on Wednesday, April 11, 2012, with the Rev. Richard Johnson and Rev. Gary Grindeland presiding. A luncheon at the church will follow. Visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Wednesday. In lieu of Flowers, memorials may be made to All Saints Lutheran Church or charities of the family’s choice. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Lindsay of HospiceCare for her care and concern.
