Med-Flight takes man to UW Hospital

BARABOO, Wis. — A Waunakee man driving a motor scooter was seriously injured when he was struck by a vehicle Sunday morning, the Sauk County Sheriff’s Department said.

Sheriff’s officials said the crash happened in the Village of West Baraboo on West Pine Street about 7 a.m. Sunday.

Officials said Stephen A. Hansen, 47, was driving a motor scooter and was slowing to make a turn into McDonald’s restaurant when a vehicle driven by James K. McVeigh, 18, of Plain, struck the scooter from behind.

McVeigh’s vehicle pushed the motor scooter 127 feet before coming to rest, according to a Sauk County Sheriff’s Department news release.

Hansen was treated at the scene for head and internal injuries and transported by Med-Flight helicopter to the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison. Hansen was wearing a helmet, authorities said.

Sheriff’s officials said McVeigh told investigators he had fallen asleep just prior to the crash and did not see Hansen prior to the collision.

The Sauk County Sheriff’s Department is still investigating the crash. Sheriff’s officials said they believe inattentive driving by McVeigh was the main cause of the crash.
