Officials say pit bull bit deputy in face during struggle

TOWN OF SUGAR CREEK, Wis. — A suspect and his pit bulls attacked two Walworth County sheriff’s deputies who were trying to arrest him on a disorderly conduct charge, the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office said.

Sheriff’s officials said the incident happened Saturday afternoon after deputies responded to a report of a man who was trespassing on a woman’s property and who made threatening statements to two young juvenile girls on the woman’s property at Oak Lane in the Town of Sugar Creek.

Deputies contacted the suspect, Daniel White, 40, at his home on Memorial Drive in the Town of Sugar Creek, according to a Walworth County Sheriff’s Office news release.

Sheriff’s officials said White refused to provide identification, secure his dogs and speak to the deputies outside of his fenced-in area. After repeating these requests several times, the deputies told White he was under arrest, according to the news release.

Deputies opened the gate to the driveway and White and his dogs stepped out, sheriff’s officials said.

Sheriff’s officials said White then struck Deputy John Czerwinski in the face with a closed fist.

White’s pit bulls attacked Czerwinski and assisting Deputy Matt Weber while they were attempting to take White into custody, and the pit bulls bit both deputies, according to the news release.

One of the pit bulls bit Czerwinski in the face during the struggle, and Weber was able to deploy his Taser gun, which released the dog that was biting Czerwinski, according to sheriff’s officials.

White was eventually taken to jail, sheriff’s officials said. Charges of trespassing, battery to an officer, resisting arrest, failure to comply with an officer and disorderly conduct have been referred to the District Attorneys Office.

White was booked and released and he remains free after posting a signature bond on Tuesday.
