Sheriff: Body found in lake early Saturday

Authorities are investigating the death of a man whose body was found in the southeast area of Lake Monona early Saturday.

Dane County sheriff’s Lt. Tim Schuetz said deputies responded to a report of a body  found in the Yahara River near Squaw Bay at 3:08 a.m.

The nude body of an adult male was found near Bridge Road in the City of Monona, Schuetz said.

Three men fishing on the water from a boat found the body and reported it, according to the sheriff’s office. Monona EMS, Monona police and the Dane County Sheriff’s Office Marine And Trail Enforcement met the fisherman at the shoreline at Graham Park where the men had escorted the body.

Schuetz said the agency is conducting a death investigation but the death doesn’t appear suspicious.

“We don’t have any reason to believe it is (suspicious) at this time,” he said.

Schuetz said authorities are interested in clothing they said may have been left on the shoreline or water in the area. Of particular interest are black athletic shorts, a gray short-sleeved T-shirt and black flip flops. Call 608-284-6155 if clothing is found.

The medical examiner is performing an autopsy and working to confirm the man’s identity and a cause of death, Schuetz said.

The sheriff’s office said it is interested interested in hearing from anyone who may have seen a man walking in the area of the Yahara River between 7 p.m. Friday and 3 a.m. Saturday.
