Severe thunderstorms roll through southern Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. — Commuters going to work Monday morning contended with severe thunderstorms rumbling through southern Wisconsin.

The National Weather Service indicated the storms could damage roofs and trees in the area.

Alliant Energy reported 4,957 customers without power in Sauk County, 257 in Columbia County, 662 in Grant County and 1,061 in Dane County.

WISC-TV meteorologist Haddie McLean said the big threat from Monday morning’s storms is wind damage.

“These storms have a history of damaging winds,” said McLean.  “Numerous trees are down in Sauk county as a result.  In addition, these storms are capable of producing large hail and torrential rainfall.”

McLean said there is a chance for additional thunderstorm development this afternoon. 

The heat may return to southern Wisconsin in between the storms.

“Expect hot and very humid conditions this afternoon,” said McLean.  “Highs will be near 90 with heat index values in the upper 90s.”
