Scammers posing as utility pop up again

Madison police said they’re fielding new reports of scam phone calls coming from someone saying they work for a local utility company and threatening to shut off service.
Police said a west side dental office reported getting a call from someone claiming to represent Madison Gas and Electric threatening to shut down service in an hour if they don’t make good on a $2,500 bill. The scammer wanted payment via a pre-paid credit card purchased at a grocery store.
The person taking the call knew the bills were paid on time, and that the call was not legitimate.
Police said the scammer was calling from 888-654-1482.
