Scammer uses Madison address in Harley sale fraud, police say

MADISON, Wis. — A 67-year-old man was duped by a scammer who used a west Madison address in a faux classified ad about a motorcycle for sale, police said.
The Madison Police Department said a Florida man responded to a newspaper ad from a man named Paul who said he had a Harley Davidson motorcycle for sale.
Through the course of several phone calls and text messages, the buyer had his son wire $2,000 to Paul, who was also asking for another $5,000 deposit on the Chopper.
The would-be bike owner was not willing to pay more money until he saw the Harley, which he was told was at a house on Bradbury Road in Madison.
A Madison officer confirmed the family living at the Bradbury home was not selling a Harley, and that the address had been picked by criminals as part of a scam.
The Florida man provided the officer with Paul’s phone number. When the officer called it, a man with an accent answered. “Paul” hung up after the officer began asking questions about a fraudulent Harley transaction in Madison.
