Sandra Lou Balfour

MIDDLETON – Sandra Lou Balfour, age 84, of Middleton, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2022, at Attic Angel Health Center. She was born in Chariton, Iowa, on Oct. 16, 1938, the daughter of Charles and Rowena (Brown) Goodell.

Sandra attended the University of Nebraska, where she met Raymond Balfour, and they married after graduating. Sandra and Raymond moved east and spent years in Ithaca, N.Y., Cleveland, Ohio, and Philadelphia, Pa., before settling in Madison in 1979, with their three sons. Sandra and Raymond were faithful Badgers fans and particularly enjoyed watching the football and basketball teams.

Sandra was an avid walker throughout her lifetime. She walked every morning with friends and by herself. Sandra was a volunteer for nearly 30 years at Attic Angel Place, where she and Ray later lived. She made lifelong friendships from childhood and from every phase of her life, and from her involvement in the PEO society and the Chi Omega sorority.

Sandra and Ray had a passion for international travel and “birding” and traveled the globe many times. Together, they made lasting friendships with people from all corners of the world. Ray enjoyed planning the trips and they often stayed in small B&Bs in remote locations. While in Madison, they loved playing bridge with close friends.

Sandra is survived by her sons, Bryan Balfour, his wife, Mary Beth Cishek, and their sons, Jack and Andrew; Kevin Balfour and his son, Tristan; and Carter Balfour and his wife, Holly Balfour, and their children, Adeline, Oliver and Phoebe; and by her brothers, Greg, Gary and Jeff. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Balfour; and parents, Charles and Rowena Goodell.

We would like to thank the many fantastic caregivers and administrators at Attic Angel Place. Without exception, they were kind and took great care of Sandra and Ray.

A celebration of life will be held at GUNDERSON WEST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 7435 University Ave., Middleton, from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2023, with a time of sharing stories at 4:30 p.m.
