Sandra A. Statz

MOUNT HOREB/MADISON-Sandra A. Statz, age 63, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2016, surrounded by her loved ones.
She was born on Aug. 9, 1952, at Camp McCoy, Wis. Following graduation from Wellsville High School in Kansas in 1970, Sandy returned to Wisconsin to begin working and complete her education. She competed as a contestant in the Miss Wisconsin Rapids Beauty Pageant that same year. Sandy attended Mid-State Technical College in Wisconsin Rapids, earning her associate’s degree in Child Care.
It was in college that Sandy met the love of her life and on Dec. 2, 1972, and the former Sandra Hackbarth married Paul Statz in Wisconsin Rapids. Sandy and Paul moved to Mount Horeb in 1978, where they raised their four daughters. She taught preschool and was a child care provider before becoming a small business owner, operating her store “A Little Bit of Everything” in Mt Horeb. Sandy also studied with Paul in the early 1990’s and they both earned their certification as Reiki Masters. With her proprietorship and involvement in the community, Sandy was a “woman before her time”. She also made time to lead the Wisconsin Chapter of Romance Writers, critiquing other authors’ books and articles. Sandy shared her passion for garage sales and auctions with Paul and they enjoyed exploring together. She enjoyed baking, especially with her grandchildren, and while sharing her love of baking with Gemma, discovering new recipes to try, knitting, crafting, collecting, reading, writing and bargain shopping. If there was a deal to be had she found it! Everything Sandy did, she did with excellence and added her own unique creativeness which gave everything her special touch. She was a great friend to many and found great joy in doing for others.
Sandy also loved to travel, most recently to Alaska and Las Vegas. She and her sisters always looked forward to their annual “Bed and Breakfast weekends” traveling to a different area each year.
What Sandy cherished most, was spending time with her daughters and all of her grandchildren. Sandy is survived by her daughters, Nicole Renz, Jessica (Cuauhtemoc, “Rod”) Rodriguez, Jasmin (Ric Grayson) Statz and Jade Statz; her grandchildren, Temo, Webb, Enrique, Kaitlin, Emiliano, Miranda, Austin Howard and Cian Evans-Grayson; her parents, Keith and Arlene “Pinch” Hackbarth; her siblings, Keith Jr, Bill (Jennifer), Patty (“95”), Claire, Alan (Cheryl), Karl (Danette), Lee (Edye), Jane (David), Rick Wicks, Dawn (Butch), Denis (Ann), Debra (Bud) and Michael (Priscilla); and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul; granddaughter, Chelsea; her son-in-law Jerome; her birth mother, Lucille; and her step-brother, Randy Wicks.
A Celebration of Life for Sandra will be held at KALSCHEUR PARK, 3734 County Rd P, Cross Plains, from noon until 4 p.m., on Saturday, May 21, 2016. Please consider joining her family as they honor and celebrate Sandy. “Baking and love go hand in hand, for as one bakes a tasty treat and fills the room with its sweet aroma, the true joy is to take what has been made and share it with another.” The family would like to extend a special thank you to Wisconsin Dialysis for being there for Mom.
