Ruth Ann Derouin

Ruth Ann Derouin, age 93, of Janesville, died on Sunday, July 9, 2017, at home surrounded by her family.

She was born in Dougherty, IA on June 6, 1924, the daughter of George Carl and Katherine (Gallagher) Freudenberg. She graduated as salutatorian of her class from St. Joseph’s High School in Mason City, IA in 1942. Ruth Ann married the love of her life, Herman “Babe” Derouin at Sacred Heart Church in Rockwell, IA on May 12, 1943. They enjoyed nearly 52 happy years together. He preceded her in death on April 8, 1995. Ruth Ann was formerly a member of Thunder Hills Country Club in Dubuque and the Janesville Woman’s Club. She was an accomplished athlete beginning as a highly recognized high school basketball player where her competitive instincts were born. In her later years, she enjoyed adult bowling leagues and couple’s golf. She was an avid bridge player and a merciless poker player with her grandchildren. Ruth Ann was a voracious reader and remained vitally interested in world and national news until the end. She was a woman of deep faith with a boundless love for children. Ruth Ann’s career included being a supportive coach’s wife, a nurturing and loving mother to 9 children, and later a Hall of Fame associate and department manager at Younker’s, retiring in 1997 after 25 years. She joyfully succeeded in each.

She is survived by her 9 children: Thomas (Joan) Derouin of Savage, MN, Mary K. Derouin of Janesville, WI, James Derouin of Janesville, WI, Ellen (Dennis) Trappe of Fort Wayne, IN, Barbara (Mark) Gibson of La Crosse, WI, Michele (Daniel) Hanley of Bloomington, IL, Susan (Jeffrey) Engler of Oconomowoc, WI, Robert Derouin of Dubuque, IA, and Steven Derouin of Gilbert, AZ; 27 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; sister, Patricia (Richard) Bamrick of Long Beach, CA; brother, Gerald (Margie) Freudenberg of Laughlin, NV; and special friend, Camilla Owen of Janesville, WI. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, William J. and George Carroll; and sisters, Mary Louise, Betty, Marjorie and Janice.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, July 14, 2017, at ST. JOHN VIANNEY CATHOLIC CHURCH with The Very Rev. Paul Arinze officiating. A visitation will be held on Friday from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Church. Interment will be on Saturday, July 15, 2017, in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Dubuque, IA at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Agrace Hospice & Palliative Care, 2901 N.
