The Rev. Curtis P. Everson, age 85, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2017. He was born on Aug. 6, 1932, in Black Earth, the son of Peter and Sophia (Knudtson-Rettenmund) Everson. Curtis graduated from Black Earth High School in 1950, as Valedictorian and Class President. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he served from 1950-1954. Curtis continued his studies at St. Olaf College, in Northfield, Minn., where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and the St. Olaf Choir and graduated in 1958. In 1962, he graduated from Luther Seminary in St. Paul and later continued his graduate study at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Curtis served Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Warren, Ohio as Associate and Senior Pastor from 1962-1967 and as Pastor of West Middleton Lutheran Church in Middleton from 1967-1997 when he joined Bethel Lutheran Church as a part-time Associate Pastor until 2015. Pastor Everson is survived by one brother, James (LaVonne) Everson; sister-in-law, Lucille Rettenmund; nephew, Earl (Rosie) Rettenmund all of Black Earth; dear friends, George and Becky Bauman of Madison; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Russell (Ruth), William (Agnes) Marvin (Karen), Arthur and Ray (Eleanor) Rettenmund; and sister, Sadie (Marvin) Barsness. Memorial services will be held at WEST MIDDLETON LUTHERAN CHURCH, 3763 Pioneer Rd., Verona, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 2, 2017, with fellowship and refreshments to follow. Private burial will be at Union Cemetery, Mount Horeb. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be gifted to Bethel Lutheran Church or West Middleton Lutheran Church.
