Red Sox beat Astros to reach World Series
The Boston Red Sox beat the defending champion Houston Astros 4-1 in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series to reach their first World Series since last winning the title in 2013.
David Price pitched six scoreless innings to earn his first postseason start in 11 tries dating back to 2011. He struck out a postseason career-high nine batters while walking none and holding the Astros to three hits.
All of the game’s scoring came off home runs, with J.D. Martinez opening the scoring with a home run in the third, followed by Rafael Devers three-run homer in the sixth inning.
Marwin Gonzalez scored Houston’s only run of the game with a home run in the seventh inning.
Justin Verlander took the loss for the Astros, allowing four earned runs over six innings.
Red Sox center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. earned ALCS MVP honors after collecting a double, two home runs, four walks and nine RBIs in the series.
The 108-win Red Sox will now open the World Series Tuesday night at Fenway Park against either the Los Angeles Dodgers or Milwaukee Brewers. The Dodgers hold a 3-2 lead going into Game 6 of the NLCS on Friday night at Miller Park.
