Realtor reports Craigslist rental scam to police

Madison police said a realtor came across a new version of Craigslist real estate scam and called the alleged scammer to get details, according to a release.
A local realtor notified Madison police Friday of a new version of a Craigslist real estate scam they found online.
The scam is similar to one that has been reported over the recent years where someone pirated legitimate information on a Camden Road that is for sale, but the scammer posted the house for rent on Craiglist.
The realtor called the number listed and talked with a man who claimed he had moved to Texas after his wife died, according to the release. The man asked the prospective renter to send him a security deposit and the first month’s rent.
The man said he would mail the house key back to Madison, police said.
